How Does Cable Recycling Work?

When you call or email us about your unwanted cable, we will first assess the type of cable you have. There are many types of cable, each with different amounts of copper that can be recovered.

Once we have assessed your cable, we will work out the price we can offer you per kg. Once you are happy with the price and weight, we will take your cable away.

We will then granulate or strip the cable to recover the copper and plastic and send these materials to their respective recycling facilities.

How Much Is Scrap Cable Worth?

As mentioned above, there are many types of cable, each with its own value. The price of your cable will depend on how much copper can be recovered from it. Generally, the thicker your cable and the less insulation it has, the higher the price you may receive.

We generally deal with three grades of cable: high-grade, medium-grade and low-grade cable.

Prices are subject to daily changes as copper prices fluctuate. Bright and shiny copper can currently sell best.

Who Do We Buy Cable From?

Electricians

We buy cable from electricians on a weekly basis. We can provide you with a cable bin to store your unwanted cable, and we will collect it when it is full. This is a great way to turn unwanted cable into an additional income stream instead of paying to have it disposed of.

Data Cablers

Data cable is something we will always buy from you. You may not think your scrap Cat5 or Cat6 cable is worth much, but when you have a large job that produces a lot of it, the value can add up.

Builders and Demolition Contractors

Strip-out jobs can produce a lot of cable. If you are working on a job that generates unwanted cable, we can come to your site and weigh it.

Facility Managers, Data Centres and Telcos

We work with facility managers on scheduled collections of their unwanted cable.

Solar and Industrial Contractors

We also buy cable from solar installers and industrial contractors.

Tips to Help You Get More Money for Your Cable

By following these simple tips, you can help ensure you receive the best possible price for your unwanted cable.

  • Separate your cable by grade. Do not mix high-grade cable with low-grade cable. If your cable is mixed, you may only receive the price for the lowest grade in the load.
  • Separate copper and aluminium cable.
  • Remove plugs and lugs from your cable, if possible.
  • Keep your cable clean. Make sure there is no other rubbish mixed in with it.
  • Do not burn your cable to remove the insulation. This is illegal and harmful to the environment, and you may receive less money for burnt copper.

Should I Strip My Cable Before Selling It?

This depends on the type of cable you have. If you have heavy cable with minimal insulation, stripping it may be worthwhile. However, if you are stripping data cable, the extra money you receive may not justify the time spent stripping it.

Recycling Your Cable

There are many benefits to recycling your cable. Not only are you helping the environment, but you can also earn some extra money. By recycling copper, you help reduce the amount of new copper that needs to be mined and refined.

Cable recycling can also support your sustainability goals and help you report on your recycling efforts. You can also recycle unwanted electric motors to recover valuable metals and reduce industrial waste.
